You wish to travel in Russia, but you don't like groups? And you wish to share daily life with Russian Friends? You are a fan of Pusjkin, Achmatova, and Brodskij? Take a course in Russian literature with your private teacher in Russia!
I would like to recommend to people interested in Russian literature my Russian friend Roman in St Petersburg. Roman has composed an extremely interesting compact course of Russian literature, including excursions to relevant "literary" sites and theater performances, for individuals or small groups of up to five persons. You will be lodged at home with your teacher, and thus participate in daily Russian life! This three weeks intensive course, which covers authors from Pusjkin to Brodskij, consists of three modules, each of one week. It is possible to choose one , two or three modules, depending on your interest. You are expected to prepare lessons by reading poems, short stories, Enlgish translations, and biographies, and by answering questions, which will be used to discuss the contents. Reading knowledge of Russian is necessary.
I have myself followed part of this extremely fascinating course, and at present I continue to receive lessons though e-mail.
I have contacted Roman through the internet. My stay with his family in September-October 1998 was in accordance with all my expectations. I had my own room (of course) in their flat, the atmosphere was friendly, the meals were excellent, the prices very reasonable, the people absolutely honest and reliable. I like to stay in a family and with my own guide, because I do not like to travel in groups. Roman has a broad erudition, he knows a lot about history, art, literature, he is a typical Russian intellectual.
In january 2000 year I was again for a 10 days holiday in Russia. I partly stayed again with my friends in St Petersburg, partly I travelled, with Roman as my guide, to winterly fairy-tale Pskov, the monastery of Petsjory and the estate of Pusjkin, all several hundreds of km to the south of St Petersburg. This, again, was a most enjoyable experience.
