Nature hiking in the wild and the lonely lakes around Saint Petersburg and in Karelia

Explore Russia and Russian culture with a Russian!

This program has been organized in such way that people can choose days from this program and combine them with other programs of Roman Ambourladze, like “Literature  excursion in and around Saint Petersburg”, “Cultural tour in and around Saint Petersburg”, “Pskov and other medieval towns and castles near Saint Petersburg”.

Day 1.

Arrival, meting at the airport. Transport to accommodation, making acquaintance with host families and their flats. Welcome dinner.

Day 2.

Morning: arrival from Finland railway station to Viborg.

Morning and afternoon: excursion to the medieval town of Viborg, beautifully situated on the shore of the Finnish Gulf. Visit to the old castle with its museum and donjon. Visit  to the enthralling Nordic park “ Mon repos”, on the shore of a fjord, and with many cliffs, capes, and pavilions.

Evening: Departure from Viborg by train to Repino. Lodging in “Repino” hotel.

Day 3.

Morning: 6 km ramble on the beach of Finnish gulf in Repino.

Afternoon: Visit to the former datja of the famous painter Repin, now a museum. Then a ramble along the beach (5km) and through pine wood, ending with a dinner by the camp-fire.

Evening: return to Saint Petersburg

Day 4.

Free, with possibility to participate in an excursion through Saint Petersburg (gardens of Saint Petersburg, or Hermitage, or Russian museum (see also “Cultural tour in and around Saint Petersburg”)).

Day 5.

Morning and afternoon: Visit by bus (public transport) to castle “Oresjek” (=Schliesselburg) on the shore of Ladozjskoe Lake, a former prison; then walk through the woods, ending with dinner by the camp-fire.

Evening: return to Saint Petersburg.

Day 6.

Morning: transport by train (from Finlandskii vokzal=station) to the hiking itinerary not far from Sosnovo.

Late in the morning, and afternoon: 20 km ramble through wild pine forests including a visit (with bathing) in a march lake in the middle of nowhere, and ending with a dinner by the camp-fire.

Evening: Transportation by train to Priozersk, a small town on the shore of Ladozjskoe Lake. And accommodation on a “ Baza Otdicha”, i.e. a simple holiday accommodation, or in tents.

Day 7.

Morning: excursion to the castle of Priozersk.

Afternoon: ramble through forests and dinner by the camp-fire.

Day 8.

Morning and afternoon: 25 km ramble through wild nature, including forest lakes and deserted beaches of Ladozjskoe lake.

Day 9.

Free, or excursion in Saint Petersburg (see “Cultural tour in and around Saint Petersburg).

Day 10.

Morning and afternoon: By train from Moskovskii Vokzal to the village of Sablino with its forests, brooks and caves.

Evening: accommodation in “baza otdicha” or in tents.

Day 11.

Morning and afternoon: by train to the small town of Kirishi. Excursion to the town and tom on deciduous forests.

Day 12.

Morning and afternoon: Excursion to Vira with a visit to its small church.

Evening return to Saint Petersburg

Day 13.

Morning: By train from Finlandskii Vokzal to the Karelian village of Losevo on the shore of Vuoksa lake, with its wild rivers with rapids and deserted pine and fir forests. Accommodation in Baza otdicha “Losevo” (Holiday camp “Losevo”) or in tents.

Afternoon: ramble through the forests, bathing in the Vuoksa lake.

Evening: Party by the camp-fire.

Day 14.

Morning and afternoon: ramble along the beach of Vuoksa lake, with the extra possibility to sail (extra pay).

Evening: return to Saint Petersburg

Day 15.

Goodbye party and departure, seeing-off at the airport.

Planned theater performances are only tentative, and depend on the time of the year and the available program (mostly it is possible to choose among several tens of theatre performances).
